Walk-ins

When you walk through the entrance of the Chester County Hospital Emergency Department (ED), you will be greeted by members of our security team to perform a safety screening of you, your belongings, and a visitor that may accompany you. Once you pass through security, you will be evaluated by an experienced ED arrival nurse, who will start your treatment by performing a rapid preliminary assessment of your condition. A Patient Access staff member will perform a preliminary registration to allow us to order tests and initiate treatments in our hospital electronic ordering system. You can stay up-to-date with your care via your MyChart by myPennMedicine account. If you do not already have a MyChart by myPennMedicine account, full registration will be completed later during your visit.

From there, an ED nurse will call you to an intake room, where you will be able to discuss your emergency. This secondary assessment will permit the clinical team to initiate treatment such as radiology, laboratory, or electrocardiogram testing. The ED nurse will determine which area of the emergency department will best suit you and your care needs. Please note, patients with the most emergent conditions are prioritized first.

Medical treatment in the ED -- including medications, laboratory and radiology testing -- can be managed from arrival to discharge in several care areas of the ED, including our main waiting area. For those in more critical condition, the ED team may move the patient to another area of the ED for personalized monitoring and treatment.

Ambulance

Patients who are transported to the hospital by ambulance will be evaluated and initially assessed and directed to an appropriate area of the ED. Treatment may start in the main waiting room triage area, or you may be moved directly to a full treatment space.
