Gynecologic Oncology is a subspecialty of obstetrics and gynecology (OB/GYN) devoted to the diagnosis and treatment of cancers of the female reproductive system (also called gynecologic cancers). Physicians who specialize in this area of OB/GYN are referred to as gynecologic oncologists. Gynecologic oncologists first complete training in the specialty of OB/GYN before completing advanced training in gynecologic oncology.
Gynecologic cancer can affect any part of a woman's reproductive system including the ovaries, uterus, cervix, fallopian tubes, vagina, and vulva. Gynecologic oncologists are trained to treat cancer both surgically and medically including performing surgery to remove cancer tumors, lymph nodes and surrounding tissue, administering chemotherapy, treating cancer recurrence, and performing research in clinical trials.
If you have been diagnosed with gynecologic cancer, your gynecologic oncologist will work with you to develop an individualized plan of care that involves the appropriate medical specialists to meet your healthcare needs.
