Certain types or robotic surgeries can now be performed with virtually no scarring and minimal pain thanks to a new technique. The da Vinci® Single-Site™ Surgical System provides all of the benefits of robotic surgery - reduced pain and blood loss, shorter recovery times, a faster return to normal activities - with only one incision point. Using robotic assistance, our team can perform hysterectomies and gallbladder removals through a one-inch incision in the navel, leaving only a small, nearly invisible scar.
Unlike traditional robotic surgeries requiring three to five small incisions, this new technology allows for a single incision in the navel where instruments are placed and either the uterus (hysterectomy) or gallbladder is removed. These surgeries can be performed in about one hour with a typical hospital stay of less than 24 hours.
During the procedure, the surgeon sits comfortably at a console, viewing a three-dimensional, high-definition image of the patient's anatomy. The surgeon uses hand-held controls to move the instrument's arms and camera. In real-time, the system translates the surgeon's hand, wrist and finger movements into precise movements of the miniaturized instruments inside the patient.
Not all patients are candidates for robotic surgery. Speak with your physician to see if the daVinci is right for you.
