The Pediatric Day Surgery Program provides care for children by doctors and nurses specially trained to meet the needs of children. Here are some important things to know prior to admitting your child to Chester County Hospital for surgery.

Pre-Admission Testing/Pre-Registration
If a blood test is needed prior to surgery, The Chester County Hospital will contact you to schedule this laboratory appointment several weeks before the procedure. If no laboratory appointment is necessary, the Hospital staff will pre-register your child for the surgical procedure and a member of the Anesthesia Department will review the Pediatric patient's medical history. This will be done by phone.

Day Before Surgery
On the day before surgery, call the Ambulatory Care Center at 610.431.5138 between the hours of 1:30 and 3:00 pm for your child's scheduled time of arrival.

Day of Surgery
Unless otherwise instructed during your Pre-Admission interview, report to the Ambulatory Care Center at the scheduled time. After registration, you and your child will be directed to the Pediatric Unit. Please limit the number of family members accompanying your child to two adults.

At the Pediatric Unit, a staff member will greet you and your child and assist you to a room. They will apply a name bracelet, check your child's vital signs and then assist your child into hospital pajamas. You will have an opportunity to talk with a member of the Anesthesia Department during the Pre-Admission Testing interview and on the morning of surgery.

A transporter will escort your child to the operating room. You are welcome to accompany your child and we encourage children to bring a special small toy or stuffed animal. During the procedure, you are encouraged to wait in the Family Lounge, located near the Operating Room. Your child's surgeon will talk to you shortly after the surgery is completed. After about one hour in the Recovery Room, your child will return to the Pediatric Unit and be discharged from the Hospital following the appropriate recovery period. A nurse will instruct you regarding care for your child.
