Delbert Vannicolo

Q: What is your role and how long have you been at Chester County Hospital?
A: I have been a registered nurse at Chester County Hospital since August of 2002. I began in the Cardiovascular Unit/Intensive Care Unit and transitioned to the Invasive Cardiology Department in 2003. There, I started working with the cardiac catheterization team (where they perform catheter-based procedures to diagnose and treat heart conditions) and then moved into the electrophysiology side of the department, which focuses on the electrical activity in the heart, including treating conditions like atrial fibrillation. I am currently one of the core members of the electrophysiology team.

Q: What inspired you to choose your career and work in health care?
A: I began my health care career early by becoming a nurse's aide at the age of 16. I loved caring for elderly patients in the nursing home I worked in. I consider myself a born caretaker – it is my passion to help care for those who are sick or injured. I thought of no other career that would be for me.

Q: What do you love most about your job?
A: I love the feeling of assisting in the electrophysiology procedures. It is a challenging and progressive field and gives me great pleasure to be able to eradicate the cardiac dysrhythmias (irregular heartbeat) my patients have. We also implant cardiac devices, which can help save a person's life by controlling irregular heartbeats for those with heart rhythm disorders. Our patients are so appreciative of the care they received and that makes me proud to be a nurse. All the team members I work with strive to give the best patient and family care. We are a dynamic and collaborative team.

Q: What do you consider to be a game changer with Chester County Hospital's expansion?
A: We are expanding our cardiovascular services as well as our operating room services. The expanded facilities will provide new technologies and services for our community, such as TAVR and Watchman. It is an exciting time for Chester County Hospital to provide these services to our patients and families.
