Hematology/Oncology, also called medical oncology, deals with the diagnosis, treatment and management of people who have cancer. The specialty focuses on treating cancer with chemotherapy, a treatment using chemical agents that destroy cancer cells. Chemotherapy can be administered through a vein, by mouth, via an injection, or applied to the skin. It can be used alone or in combination with other treatments, including surgery and/or radiation therapy. Hematology focuses specifically on diagnosing and treating disorders of the blood and bone marrow.
