Heart and Sole 5K Run Walk Banner

Date: September 17, 2017
Location: Henderson High School
Benefits: The Abramson Cancer Center at Chester County Hospital

The Heart + Sole 5k began as a run/walk in tribute to one person's memory, but it has since become a collection of teams and individuals each running for their own reason. There are friends and family members celebrating victory over cancer. Others are encouraging their loved ones in the fight of their life. For those that have lost their battle with cancer, we remember. And for some, the Heart + Sole is a milestone - a personal goal - in their commitment to good health. And for all of us, it's a great way to prepare for Cancer Awareness Month (October) and support patients living with cancer in our own community.

In 2011, Henderson High School students Steve Jordan and Drew Kelly started the race in memory of Fatiha Khattabi, a friend's mother who lost her fight with stomach cancer. The next year, Dominic Smith continued the run. He was joined by the daughter-in-laws of Josephine Gatto - Megan and Felicia - as they honored the matriarch of their family. Megan and Felicia were then joined by Henderson students Luigi Capriotti and Kyle DeMarino. Seniors Eva Finnegan, Becca Hobman, Nikki Kirkland and Grace Tenbroeck continued in their footsteps by helping to plan the 2015 Heart + Sole. The fundraising run benefits The Abramson Cancer Center at Chester County Hospital, which combines cutting-edge treatment and technology, patient programs and a caring staff to give every patient the edge in their battle with cancer.

The Heart & Sole is dedicated to the memories of Josephine Gatto and Fatiha Khattabi.

ABOUT THE FOUNDING TEAMS

Josephine GattoTEAM GATTO: Josephine Gatto lived a life focused on her family, friends and community. Although Josephine lost her battle with small cell lung cancer in November 2010, it was her desire to help others - especially women - in their fight by supporting The Cancer Program of Chester County Hospital.

TEAM KHATTABI: Fatiha Khattabi, the caring mother of three, lost the difficult battle to stomach cancer at age 35 after months of treatment and therapy. Fatiha worked all her life to provide her children with the best education and inspired many others to pursue their dreams. She was very generous to her friends and family and was often seen volunteering in her community and at her local mosque. It would be an honor for her to bring the community together in support of the fight against cancer while enjoying the beautiful weather. It would mean everything to her to see the smiles as people overcome their hurdles, because to her, nothing was impossible.
