(West Chester, PA) - Chester County Hospital has been honored as a 2019 top performer in the Bernard A. Birnbaum, MD, Quality Leadership Award from Vizient. The hospital placed number one nationwide in the complex care medical center category and was one of seven health care facilities nationwide to achieve this recognition. The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania was also awarded at the academic medical center level and Penn Presbyterian Medical Center was honored in the large, specialized complex care medical center category.

Chester County Hospital earned the honor by demonstrating superior performance in delivering high-quality care. To determine the annual award winners, Vizient measured hospitals across the country using its Quality and Accountability Study. The study identifies high-performing facilities in the areas of quality and safety by using six domains of data. The measures include safety, mortality, effectiveness, efficiency and patient centeredness, leveraging information in the Vizient Clinical Data Base as well as performance in core measures data, the HCAHPS survey and the CDC's National Healthcare Safety Network.

"Being ranked as number one nationwide for quality and leadership in our category demonstrates the focus and hard work put in by Chester County Hospital's staff and providers to achieve the highest quality care for our community," Karen Pinsky, MD, Chief Medical Officer, said.

The award was presented during the 2019 Vizient Fall Connections Summit earlier this month in Las Vegas. According to Byron Jobe, President and Chief Executive Officer for Vizient, "This year's award winners demonstrate how advanced analytics, when combined with leadership, collaboration and adaptability, can create a shared sense of purpose within an organization that enables it to improve patient care and outcomes across the care continuum. We are proud to recognize the achievements of each top performing organization."

"For more than 125 years we have strived to ensure that care is accessible, safe, effective, efficient and patient centered for our friends, families and neighbors. This recognition comes ahead of our expansion grand opening and further illustrates our commitment to caring for our community with the highest level of quality possible," Michael J. Duncan, President and Chief Executive Officer at Chester County Hospital, shared.
